50 tiny Queensland bubs welcomed in 24-hours across Mater

Fifty new Queenslanders have been welcomed to the world in one of the busiest-ever 24 hours at Mater Mothers’ hospitals.

 

These five tiny newborns were among the 44 bubs who were born at Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane and Mater Mothers' Hospital on 30 August, with another six babies arriving at other Mater Mothers’ hospitals across regional Queensland.

 

The record number of Mater babies born across the state was 52, on 18 October last year.

 

Some parents have attributed a rare astronomical event – a super blue moon – as the reason for their baby’s arrival and the bumper day of births.

 

According to hospital data, the highest number of babies born in one day across Mater hospitals in South East Queensland was 45, which was recorded on 18 October, 2021.

 

Mater Mothers’ hospitals General Manager Kerri Gane said 30 August was “very close to a record-breaking day”.

 

“A large number of babies were born at Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane, Mater Mothers’ Hospital and Mater Mothers' Private Redland, including one set of twins,” Ms Gane said.

 

“We had six babies arrive early and spend a few days in the Mater Mothers’ Neonatal Critical Care Unit. I’m not sure what it was about 30 August, maybe it had something to do with the rare super blue moon that graced our skies that evening!” 

 

In the regions, the blue moon brought a batch of baby girls with it, with Mater Mothers’ Private Townsville welcoming three baby girls, Mater Mothers’ Private Mackay welcoming two girls and Mater Mothers’ Private Rockhampton welcoming one girl.
