Due to the evolving novel coronavirus (COVID-19), all Mater Mothers' First Aid for Babies classes help after Monday 6 April 2020 will no longer be going ahead. We plan to reassess the availability of this course from June 2020 and apologise for any inconvenience or disappointment caused.

Mater Mothers' First Aid for Babies classes

Mater Mothers’ Hospitals, in collaboration with Mater Education, is proud to offer a first aid course specifically for parents with babies.

It’s something a lot of parents have asked us for and is another step to continuing Mater's exceptional care into the home.

The 2.5 hour course was developed to equip parents with the knowledge, skills and confidence to care for their baby should they face an emergency. Participants learn to identify, respond to and manage common infant injuries and emergencies immediately, and when to go to hospital.

The hands-on session is taught by experienced paediatric and neonatal nurses, and includes information on:

  • resuscitation (CPR) for infants and young children
  • choking
  • poisoning
  • burns
  • bleeding
  • fractures
  • allergic reactions
  • respiratory illnesses.

It was developed by a highly qualified and experienced team including educators who train Mater’s exceptional staff, Mater Children's Hospital emergency clinicians, and is endorsed by clinicians working across both Mater Mothers’ Hospitals’ Neonatal Critical Care Unit and Mater Children’s Private Brisbane.

The course costs $90 per person or $160 per couple, and this includes a booklet and quick reference magnet. Mater Mums receive a second registration at half price, paying only $135 for two people to attend.
