The grand part of grandparenting

The grand part of grandparenting

Whether you’re a nanna, a pop, a grandma or a grandpa the relationship between a grandparent and grandchild is different to that of a parent and child.

Becoming a grandparent is an exciting experience, regardless of whether it’s your first grandchild or one of many.

Susan, grandma of two beautiful boys, says she loves being able to do all the fun things and looks forward to doing the same with little Sebastian, who was born at Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane earlier this month.

“You’ve done it all before with your own children, but now the responsibility is different. As a grandparent you get the fun part!” Susan said.

“Going to the park, doing new things with them they’ve never experienced before and seeing the awe on their little faces is wonderful,” she said.

Despite the relationship being different, the bond between grandparent and grandchild is a strong and special one.

“You feel as close to your grandchildren as you do to your own children,” Susan says.

“You look forward to watching them grow and develop,” she said.

It’s not all just fun and games though. Reflecting on her own experience as a new parent some thirty years ago, Susan acknowledges that a lot has changed.

If you know a grandparent who has questions about what’s different, or would just like a refresher, Mater Mothers’ Hospitals’ antenatal classes for grandparents are a great way to learn about current baby care trends and the information provided to new parents.

The free classes, held each Thursday, offer a casual environment to discuss changes and ask any questions you may have with our experienced midwife facilitator. Topics covered include dressing and wrapping, sleeping, crying, feeding, safety and supporting the new parents.
