Mater celebrates 10 000 babies in 2015

Baby Jensen was born at Mater Mothers’ Hospitals with an extra special detail to share―born at 9:41 pm, measuring 53 cm, weighing 3630 grams and Mater’s 10 000th baby born this year!

First time parents Cheree and Adam Axten welcomed Jensen Henry Axten on Wednesday 2 December 2015, following a good pregnancy.

“We chose Mater because we feel like it’s the best place to welcome a baby. It was a fairly easy choice,” said mum Cheree.

“We’ve always been told that the midwives are a really good team here. Everyone has been so nice and supportive.”

Baby Jensen will leave Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane on Monday, in time to spend Christmas with his mum and dad at home.

He was one of 34 babies born at Mater on Tuesday. An average of 28 babies are born each day at Mater Mothers’ Hospitals at South Brisbane and Mater Mothers’ Private Redland.

Mater Mothers' Director of Women’s Health Services, Maree Reynolds, said every birth was a special occasion at Mater, but particularly being the 10 000th baby born for the year.

“We are thrilled to have reached this important milestone, especially in time for Christmas, and we wish the Axten family all the best as they enjoy baby Jensen,” she said.

“We are very proud that so many Queensland families trust Mater Mothers as their maternity service and we feel privileged to share in many precious first moments.”

The busiest day of the year so far has been 25 August with 47 babies born, while the busiest month so far has been July with 971 babies born across Mater Mothers’ Hospital, Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane and Mater Private Hospital Redland.

There have also been 472 multiple births—made up of twins and triplets.

Ms Reynolds said one-in-seven Queensland babies are born at Mater Mothers, making Mater Australia’s largest maternity service.

“Our reputation as a hospital that provides a very high level of care and expertise is something we are very proud of and this is evident by the large number of babies born at Mater each year.”
