Rugby star’s last-minute run for baby Alfie’s birth

Australian Rugby Union player James Hanson has revealed he made it to his newborn son’s birth in the nick of time.

The Toowong couple welcomed their second child Alfred Peter Hanson at Mater Mothers’ Private Brisbane on Friday 12 August weighing 3.9 kg.

Hanson, 33, who plays for the Melbourne Rebels, said after a long day of waiting for the arrival of his son, Ashlee was advised to get some rest.

“I thought it was a good opportunity to get some fresh air and some food for what was meant to be a few hours yet to go,” Hanson said.

“I went for a walk and got a call from Ash not long after saying the baby was coming. I dropped my sushi and legged it back to the room and by that time Alfie was already starting to arrive.

“I’m glad I got there in time. It was such an amazing experience and very different to when we had our daughter Penelope in the UK.”

Hanson said he was so thankful Alfie had arrived “happy and healthy”.

“We all had great support from the staff at Mater,” he said.

The couple decided on the name Alfred, after their daughter Penelope, 2.5, started calling him ‘Alfie’ when Ashlee was pregnant.

Since arriving home from hospital a few days ago, Hanson said Penelope had taken on the role of big sister in her stride.

“We did a gender reveal in Melbourne which helped Penelope get her head around having a little baby boy join the family,” he said.

“A few months ago, we bought her a little doll and she’s been looking after it, changing nappies, putting him to sleep and being gentle. But when Alfie starts crying, she gets a bit concerned,” he laughed.

With the rugby season recently ending, Hanson said he was focused on spending time with his little family.

Hanson is a former Wallabies and Queensland Reds player.
