Mater Mothers’ first aid for babies course proves popular with new parents

Due to popular demand, the Mater Mothers’ first aid for babies course schedule is expanding to enable more parents to book in and gain the skills, knowledge and confidence to care for their baby in an emergency.

The 2.5 hour hands-on course equips parents with the skills to identify, respond to and manage common infant injuries and emergencies including choking, poisoning, burns, bleeding, fractures, allergic reactions and respiratory illnesses. The course also covers resuscitation (CPR) for infants and young children, and recognising when to go to hospital or seek emergency assistance.

Mater Education Course Coordinator Toni-Maree Henaway said more than one thousand new and expecting parents and grandparents have completed the course since it was first introduced in April 2015.

“It can be a little daunting for parents to bring a newborn baby home for the first time. We want to help them feel a little more comfortable, knowing they are well equipped to handle potential emergency situations,” Ms Henaway said.

Feedback from course participants has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants noting that the class “made scary situations easier to deal with”, that they “enjoyed practicing on dolls [infant CPR manikins] to remove the nerves associated with a scary situation”, and that they “felt reassured about what to do for common problems.”

The course was developed by a highly qualified and experienced team including educators who train Mater’s exceptional staff, paediatric emergency clinicians and is endorsed by clinicians working across both Mater Mothers’ Hospitals’ Neonatal Critical Care Unit and Mater Children’s Private Brisbane.

The course costs $90 per person or $160 per couple. Mater mums receive a second registration at half price, paying only $135 for two people to attend.
