Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Liaison Service

Our Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Liaison Team offers cultural support and advocacy to empower mob to make informed health care choices and always have a say in their care.

How we can help:

  • advice and access to culturally appropriate services such as social workers, to determine social barriers and needs,
  • ongoing support and assistance or referral to external partners and service providers
  • transport to and from appointments at the hospital
  • organise and attend family meetings
  • a safe space in our office for families to share tea, coffee and biscuits.

Can I access the service?

Anyone who identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, as well as mothers carrying a baby who may identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.

We endeavour to meet every patient who identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander at their bedside.

If you’d like our team to support you, please identify yourself at Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.

You can let staff know anytime: upon admission, during your stay or ahead of time (via a referral from your GP or health care provider).

Our team will be notified automatically and will come to you.

Referrals are not required, but they help to make sure no one is overlooked, particularly patients who are new to our service.

How does it work?

We have a team of five liaison officers based at South Brisbane: Tanya (Team Leader), Aretha, Samantha, Yvette and Kate.

We support patients at South Brisbane (in person) and can offer phone support to patients at Redland and Springfield as required.

We can also attend outpatient appointments with patients requiring additional support, as required.

Can I find out more?

Please get in touch with our Liaison Services team directly (Monday to Friday 8am - 4pm) if you have questions.
