Harry the leapling

Dean and Megan Nipperess knew having a leap year baby was guaranteed when they presented at Mater Mother’s Private Brisbane at midnight on Sunday 28 February.

The first time parents welcomed beautiful baby Harry at 6.02 pm on Monday 29 February, weighing 3814 g and 54 cm long.

To say it was a long day would be an understatement. Grandmothers Pamela and Janice and great grandmother Doreen waited patiently in the Mater Mother’s atrium, excitement and anxiety growing as each hour passed.

Dad Dean said he didn’t mind Harry was born on 29 February.

“I’m happy that he’s a bit unique, and honestly, there wasn’t much we could do about it!” he said.

The question of when to celebrate birthdays in non leap years isn’t a problem for Harry’s parents.

“We decided that if he was born before midday, it would be 28 February, but after midday we would celebrate on 1 March,” Dean said.

Mum Megan is a Primary school teacher and wondered at what point Harry would even begin to understand what it means to be a leap year baby.

“It’s a pretty complex concept to explain to a child – we’ll celebrate a birthday every year, but leap years will be pretty special,” she said.

The odds of being born on a leap day are one in 1461.

Harry was one of 22 babies born at Mater that day.

Just imagine, when Harry celebrates his 84 years, he’ll be able to celebrate his actual 21 st birthday!
