Little fighter Harrison’s rocky start to life

Little Harrison had a rocky start to life. Mater Mum Nicole shares her experience having a due date of 10 August, yet suffered preterm labour at 25 weeks and 4 days and a 95 day journey in the Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NCCU).

“From the moment we arrived at the Pregnancy Assessment Centre (PAC), the staff were incredible.

Once they realised I was in full labour, it was all hands on deck. My husband and I were kept up to date with everything, even though there was so much going on and so much information to take in.

We arrived around 9 pm, and at 2.28 am the following morning, our son was delivered on Monday 1 May via emergency caesarean section as he as was breech. He weighed just 820 grams.

Our first experience in NCCU was wonderful–the staff were amazing beyond words. We went home every day knowing he was in the best place receiving the best care possible.

They made sure we understood what we were being told, always asked if we had any questions, and were so kind and caring. We spent the next three months on Level 6, and are beyond grateful for the care we and our son received.

After 95 days, six days shy of his due date, we were finally discharged. Harrison weighed a healthy 3.26 kg and is doing fantastically well.“
